Post 63 in an ongoing series describing the design and construction of a kabukimon, a type of Japanese gate. This is a project for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Had a slight setback the other day in cleaning out the mortises, where I remembered a number incorrectly and that left the mortises on the side door stiles for the rails over dimension. So, I had to make up a couple of new stiles.
Anyway, after the ‘one step forward, two steps back’ routine, I was making progress again today. Managed to fit the rails and battens to the left hand door stile. He is one of the mortises for the bottom rail after cut is complete:

This shows the inside face of the door, where the battens meet the stile:
The batten faces are offset from the stile’s inner face by 3mm or so, which I will likely increase to 5mm so that I can chamfer the inner arris of the stile a little more:

Chris, it would be good to have a post specifically on your tools for laying out the lines and making pencil marks. Of course, get your work on this gig done first!

thanks for the suggestion. I certainly make use of a wide variety of layout tools, so that would be worth a posting at some point.

It certainly wasn't the start to the day that I was looking for. At least the mistake was cleanly cut, and thoroughly done, as I had completed all the mortises before noticing the issue.
